What Is Vehicle-to-Load

V2L (Vehicle to Load) is an ingenious bidirectional feature which utilizes the vast energy capacity of an electric vehicle battery to either power or charge another device. With the V2L technology, you can charge an array of devices such as a smartphone, another electric car, television or a coffee machine. This feature is highly beneficial as a large portion of the battery power remains unused during most days. Moreover, this feature is also designed to enhance consumer appeal and maximise their overall satisfaction.

The power output of V2L is usually either 2.3kW (equal to a 3-pin plug) or 3.6kW. This technology is integrated in the vehicle itself and is not available in the adapter. The adapter does facilitate power transfer to the cable, however, the actual conversion from Direct Current (DC) to Alternating Current (AC) is managed inside the vehicle.

V2L systems may come with a range of different voltage levels to accommodate different needs across different countries. For instance, in North America, the devices would usually require 120V while in other parts of the world, they would usually require 220V.

An Onboard Charger (OBC) is an essential component of this system. It serves the purpose of a fail-safe to shut off power in case of an overload and also mitigates the risk of electrical failure. It is also crucial for cyber security as it creates a secure connection between the internal and external components.

At LANDWORLD, our solutions are designed to be highly modular and to provide OEMs with maximum scalability and reuse potential. We make sure that our onboard charger technology adheres to all applicable standards, and can switch between different voltage modes as and when needed.
